Broch’s life went on, which meant that his wedding to Kenna was drawing nearer. As time wore on, however, he began to wonder if he had committed himself to the wrong woman. Kenna was childish, demanding, and selfish. She always wanted what she could not have, and before long she had worn him down to the point where he was beginning to dislike her intensely. He would never use the word “hate,” for that was anathema to him, but he knew that the emotions he felt were not the ones he should have been feeling for someone he was going to share his life with forever.

However, he reasoned that perhaps he did not know her properly yet. Perhaps she had depths he had not yet discovered. He had promised himself that he would end the betrothal if he had to, but that was easier said than done. There were not only emotional consequences but financial ones too. He was definitely not poor and could afford compensation if her father demanded it, but her reputation would be ruined, and he would be loath to do that to her. No, somehow, he was determined that he would make things work.

He was lost in thought as he walked through the fabric market in Glengaur with Kenna. She had disappeared to the silk merchant to find some material for her wedding gown, and he was idly pottering around amongst stalls selling ironmongery and carved wooden ornaments when suddenly he heard a soft, familiar voice by his side.

“M’Laird,” Alison Prentice said with a curtsey, “I trust I find you well.”

His heart skipped a beat. She was dressed in a plain dark brown woolen dress without any frill or ornament on it, but she still managed to look stunning. Her sea-colored eyes were looking up at him anxiously, and suddenly all he wanted to do was kiss her and tell her not to be afraid of him.

“Mistress Prentice,” he said softly, “I am well, and you?” He kissed her hand, trying not to pretend it was her lips.

“I am too...” She hesitated awkwardly, and then looked at the ground, avoiding his eyes before she rushed on. “I am sorry. I am heartily sorry that I said such cruel and unjust things to you the last time we met. Of course, you did not murder my cousin. You did your best to save her life and I know that but I was upset and...and I needed someone to blame. Please forgive me.”

Broch felt sorry for her as he saw tears beginning to course down her cheeks and drip from her chin. He took both of her hands in his. “Of course I forgive you, Mistress Alison,” he said gently. “Everyone feels grief differently. You were not thinking as clearly as you usually do, and that is quite understandable.”

She shook her head. “It was mean. I should have thought about things more, and I would have seen the truth.”

“You were not capable of it then,” he insisted. “Let us put it behind us and be friends.
